A Snow Control Laboratory
In addition to the major objective of improving winter travel on I-80 between
Laramie and Walcott Junction, the study section provided an outdoor laboratory
where we could answer questions about blizzards, snow fences, snowdrifts, and
visibility, often within days or weeks. We learned how snow fences interact
with terrain, how visibility changes with time during a blizzard, how snow
fences reduce road ice and improve visibility in a blizzard. This section
of Interstate continues to provide answers for us, as well as examples for
others.
